Ho Chi Minh City

Water puppetry is considered the "national quintessence" of Vietnam and is one of the most typical folk theater forms. With over 800 years of history, this art was born in the North but in recent decades has gradually been brought to Ho Chi Minh City thanks to its great attraction to international tourists.
The water puppet show is performed on the water surface of a special stage, where the artists stand submerged in water behind them, controlling the puppets with strings or long bamboo poles. They manipulate puppets, sing, read lines and play music on the spot, making Vietnamese folk stories come alive as if they were happening before the audience's eyes.
